Stevens Auction Company is delighted to announce the commission to sell at public auction the contents of the Dancy-Polk House Inn, ca. 1829, owned by Jan Garber.

This auction will be held on-site (at 901 Railroad Street North West in Decatur), where we have teamed up with two associates to handle this important event. We, with our associates, will be selling the estate as well as the historic Dancy-Polk House Inn. Also of special note, we are selling the private collection of Civil War artifacts and memorabilia that spans five (5) decades, including guns, buckles, breast plates, and many other rare treasures.

Also up for bidding are giant Victorian mirrors, period lighting, Persian rugs, grandfather clocks, fine porcelains, rare furniture pieces, early American primitives, a great collection of American brilliant cut glass and original works of art. We will be selling a 3.67 cal. battlefield cannon used at Gettysburg, along with letters of documentation, and a drum used by a drummer boy who led troops at Gettysburg.

The Dancy-Polk House Inn is one of four buildings in Decatur to survive the Civil War and is on the National Register of Historic Places along with Alabama Register of Historic Places. It was used as headquarters for the Union Army during the war all three times Decatur was under siege. Later the home became an Inn and had such guest as Confederate General “Fightin’ Joe” Wheeler, and Union General Ely Lilly, James Garfield (later a U.S. President), Generals Urchin, Dodge, and Doolittle, as well as the notorious Frank James, who boarded there prior to his surrender.

Persons interested in the real estate should call Mike Ward of Southern Homes and Land Realty (from Villa Rica, Georgia) at 770-316-0721. Our Alabama associate is Empire Auction Gallery, of Athens (256-476-8882). Make plans now to attend this historic auction.

There will be two open house previews. The first will be on Sunday, October 06, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.pm. The second will be on Friday, October 11th from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Doors will open at 8:00 a.m. on auction day. Pictures are continuously added, so please check back often for photos of the items to be offered and for further auction information. For lodging in Decatur, we recommend Amberley Suite Hotel (256-355-6800), across the street from the auction site.
