Stevens Auction Company is delighted to announce the commission to offer at public auction the living estate of Mrs. Brenda McCarthy of Tupelo, Mississippi, along with select antiquities from two other prominent Southern estates.

The McCarthy estate is comprised of antique furnishings and other items from the Memphis, Tennessee home of McCarthy’s mother-in-law’s sister, Margaret Polk. Margaret Polk, of course, was the fianceé of Capt. Robert K. Morgan—pilot of the B-17F Flying Fortress—and the inspiration for the name, Memphis Belle.

See this link for more information on the Memphis Belle and Margaret Polk: Link.

Ms. Polk was one of four children to Oscar B. Polk and Elizabeth Robb, and, through her father, was a close relative to James K. Polk, the eleventh President of the United States. Oscar Boyd Polk was a banker, real estate developer, cotton broker and was one of largest land owners in Mississippi and Arkansas where he owns thousands of acres of cotton land. Mr. Polk built a stately, three-story Queen Anne home in Memphis and had it filled with furnishings custom-made especially for him by the R.J. Horner Company of New York, the revered 19th century furniture maker. His father, Oscar Boyle Polk, owned a large plantation in Harden County which dates back to 1820.

This auction will include hundreds of outstanding antiques, including beautiful china, silver, rugs, light fixtures, works of art, and many other items. However, the highlight of our auction will be the items from the McCarthy (Polk) Estate which include a magnificent collection made by the R. J. Horner Company of New York in 1893.

The open house preview will be on Friday, March 16, 2012, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and again, beginning at 8:00 a.m. on auction day.
